Lend me your flute and sing
Music is the secret of existence
The laments of the tunes of the times remain
Eternal vestiges of the universe

The Ney ( nay-nai al-nay), is an aerophone instrument with a mouthpiece. The Arabic Ney consists of a simple reed at both ends, without a notch, whose characteristics are constant and independent of size, timbre or register. The stamp of Ney, veiled and wounded. It is symbolic of the breath of life. The inflections are rich in harmonics and cause effects beyond conventional melomania.
The Arab nay consists of a simple reed formed of 9 segments (8 knots) open at both ends, devoid of notch but bevelled outside the mouth.
It has six anterior playing holes, divided into two similar groups of three placed in the sixth, seventh and eighth segments, and a posterior hole located in the middle of the instrument, which is plugged by the thumb.
The Ney is named according to the note produced when the first hole is opened: thus the typical Ney is the large Ney called "Doukah" (Turkish name for the note Re or "D") which therefore produces the note Do as its fundamental.
This instrument is capable of playing scholarly or folk music both solo and as a group.
