The School of Mediterranean Music in Paris offers rhythm enthusiasts and lovers of oriental percussion a course dedicated to learning, understanding and playing rhythms. Rhythm attracts us with its magic power! present around us. The percussion section is an integral part of the various Eastern orchestral formations. It is essential for any musical performance, it is the heart of the oriental orchestra.
the rhythms of the Maghreb and the oriental rhythms are composed by multiple combinations of strikes, clicks, keys and rolls, either as low sounds (high beat: Doum) or as high sounds (low beat: Tak) and it breathe through the moments of silence (time of silence: As). Each rhythm vibrates and sounds differently on percussion instruments such as the riq (tambourine), the bendir (daf or mazhar), the sagattes (finger jingles), the bongo, the tabl el baladi (el tabl el saïdi), and on the tabla (darbouka or derbouka).
Our teaching is based on a simple and well-structured method. It incorporates rhythmic writing while maintaining a balance between notation and memory exercises. With the teacher, the disciple breaks down each rhythm studied, understands its internal structure and its innumerable rhythmic variations; always with the intention of developing in him a taste for discovery and improvisation.
All Arabic rhythms are cyclical which requires a good tempo (Khatwa) and promotes ornamentation of the game to avoid monotony. Indeed, these courses respond to these principles and the student-musician will learn with experience the choice of tempo, the different playing techniques specific to his instrument as well as the styles of ornamentation. His vast knowledge of the rhythms of different geographical regions will allow him to travel in the musical traditions of the East.
